Music speaks to so many people. It can literally heighten a mood and help you navigate your feelings. I don't think today's generation of teens would understand this but I remember copying the lyrics from my favorite songs just to see them on paper. This was before the everyday use of the internet so there were many misheard words and phrases. The most butchered songs that I can recall were 'The Thong Song' which was sung as 'The Gone Song' until the music video proved we were very wrong. Another one was 'Blue' by Eiffel 65 with a bunch of da-ba-dee's and da-ba-daa's but we chose to sing 'if I was green I would die' or 'I'm in need of a guy'. I thought it was pretty clever. I miss the joy that came from opening a CD and finding that the artist/band included the lyrics to EVERY song on the album. Those days seem so far away, the days where you can sit for hours with just your thoughts and the tunes.
My husband (the musician in the family) and I listen to music very differently. He hears the instruments and the layering. He catches timing changes and I look at him like he's the only one of his kind on the planet. I attach emotion and memory to songs. I think of specific people and events and my playlists are named after what I'm doing or feeling. My Running List is a good one but lately I have been listening to my 'That Mood' list, a bit on the sad side with lots of alternative and easy listening rock. I'm looking forward to getting back to my 'Dance Mix '96' list or my 'Latina Lover' list - the happier selection to my life’s soundtrack.
